Character Name: Kaito Momota

Canon Point: Chapter 5, post-death
Character Information: V3 on wikia, Kaito on wikia

Personality:

Kaito is a very confident young man who believes in himself and others around him. His trust in others is sometimes simply just explained with "because I want to believe in them" rather than any logic. He sometimes gets a hunch he needs to trust in someone and he does without letting anyone tell him otherwise. Some say he's too naive or just stupid for trusting people, but he usually doesn't listen. He believes in friendship and the bonds they've made sincerely, but sometimes his trust in others is the biggest flaw he has.

He dislikes being called an idiot and will argue against that whenever he needs to. Very loudly and very angrily - sometimes confirming their point of being an idiot. The thing is that while he may sometimes be very dumb, he is actually rather smart. He passed the astronaut exams with flying colors and got in despite cheating his way to the tests. He knows several languages and knows a lot about the space and traveling in space. Yet he sometimes is an idiot, because he sometimes lacks certain logic skills to solve mysteries. But he doesn't want to admit that.

It's hard to tune down Kaito's optimism and confidence. He often finds a way to bounce back from any mood crash he suffers. He has his ways of cheering himself up and that easily spreads to those around him. He goes as far that the Luminary of the Stars (him) has the Universe on his side and that he's very popular with women and children. He aims for his dreams to go to space and already thinks he's a legend - even if he's only an astronaut trainee. The way he became a trainee at such a young age is a living testament of his way of thinking that you need to take risks to achieve your dreams. Take risks to make the impossible possible.

He is also a self-proclaimed hero. The hot-headed and passionate protagonist. He wishes to help everyone he is able to, even going as far as taking the blame for other people's mistakes. Kaito has taken sidekicks under his wings (with or without their permission) and always puts them in the spotlight (mostly because he hasn't figured things out himself, even if he claims to have). He extends his infinite trust towards them and believes them even when they don't believe in themselves. He also does motivational speeches when times get rough. Though he acts like a hero and someone who knows what to do, he sometimes just follows up others and then claims they said exactly what he wanted to say. Sometimes it really was, sometimes he just doesn't want to look like he's not following up on the things he's saying.

It turns out Kaito is a rather good judge of character. He's able to help Shuichi with his insight and even if he sometimes is stubborn about his opinions, he manages to help out when it's really needed. Despite his large dislike for Kokichi, it feels like he's the closest one to understanding what goes through Kokichi's mind. Most of the time, however, he's annoyed by his lies and sick interest in the killing game and making it 'fun'. It seems that with Kokichi in particular he gets mad enough to toss reason aside. He has the ability to be really hot-headed and mad to the point where he becomes physically violent.

Kaito is also rather old-fashioned. He thinks men shouldn't cry so openly and apologize so much, and that women shouldn't need to use weapons because they're better suited to caring for children. He says this to Maki, trying to make her see that she could be anything but an assassin and trying to help her by making her his second sidekick. He also drags her to train with him and Shuichi and the three form a bond during their training and conversations. Maki and Shuichi are the two closest people he has and it's them he never wants to worry or lose faith in.

He refuses to show weakness around others, which is why he hid the fact he's ill and just appears to be a strong pillar that can take his sidekicks' problems. He's often troubled for not being able to help as much as he'd want and he's even jealous of Shuichi's Detective abilities. Occult is a thing that scares Kaito very much, but he tried to keep that a secret a well (rather badly). He slipped a few times, mostly by screaming and one time clinging to Maki like his life depended on it.

There are several occasions where he appears to be just very comical. Having horrible luck with gambling, eating too much food because he felt so pumped up and even claiming he wore women's underwear just to be clear of suspicion in a trial. His expressions are also capable of going from zero to a hundred really fast. He also has a very wild imagination which shows when he tells stories about his past life. They often sound like they belong in a fiction book and it's not really sure if he's serious or not.

In the final trial of the game, it became clear that almost every character had their memories fabricated for the sake of the killing game and in reality, Kaito is someone completely different. However, Kaito has no idea or memory about his actual life, so it does not affect him.
